National Dog Day- Fun and Comfort for all

The Early Childhood Lab School at Elgin Community College celebrated National Dog Day with story times, dancing, singing and comfort dogs.

Ms. Kristina Brown, one of the teachers for Early Childhood Lab School, hosted this event with the help of student life and Lutheran Church charities.

“Last year I wanted to do some kind of a story event. I worked with student life and it just happened to be a good time of year with the comfort dogs,” said Brown. “[Student Life] asked if we wanted to do it again this year.”

This event brought a multitude of children and their family members to the front Lobby of building A to share story time with the comfort dogs, Lizzie and Kye.

“I wanted the kids to be able to experience the comfort dogs and learn what they do,” said Brown. “Any time they can bring a learning experience to our children, we want.”

The comfort dogs are trained to bring peace and happiness to people.

“We like to provide a service to make people feel good, and it’s an outreach ministry that we do,” said Ellen Ressler from the Lutheran Church Charities. “They started the ministry after the shooting at Northern Illinois University.”

Lizzie and Kye brought much happiness to the children and parents from the school, daycare and even ECC students.

“After the Boston Marathon bombing they were there. Also after shootings at schools,” said Ressler. “So they go to natural disasters, tornados, hurricanes, but we also get to do fun events like this.”

This is the second year Early childhood lab school hosted this event.

“A lot of parents don’t know we’re here- a lot of students that come and have kids,” said Brown. “They don’t necessarily know that we are on the other side of campus, so hosting these events lets people see our programs that we have and the kind of things we do with our kids.”

This event brought many people to join the fun.
