ECC students have voted on a new college mascot. And later this year, ECC officials plan to reveal the new mascot. No official date has been set.
“We are excited to unveil the new mascot costume before the end of the school year to the student body,” said Ashley Zeman, senior director of marketing strategy. “We can’t wait to see what all the students think of it. We are excited to help bring the students’ vision to life.”
The new mascot is a Spartan, a human warrior.
“It represents a winning attitude, a spirit of our college and a warrior mentality,’’ said Amybeth Maurer, Assistant Dean of Student Experience and Engagement.
ECC officials began conversations about a mascot in early 2023 and surveyed students in the spring of 2023. Nearly 300 people voted in the selection of the mascot’s costume design in fall 2023.
In the spring of 2023, Student Life decided to leverage the college’s 75th Anniversary to unveil a new mascot costume.
Overwhelmingly, feedback indicated a desire for a human mascot that aligns with ECC’s Spartan Athletics logo.
The investment for a new costume is about $9,000. The costume is expected to last between 8 and 10 years.
ECC’s first mascot was a blue cat called Spartacat and has been at ECC for 25 years. The costume was developed in 1999 as part of the college’s 50th anniversary.
