How do civilizations grow?
For third year student Yaakov Galvez, he believes, “Most cultures that blend together helps us grow as a civilization.” Galvez reflects on being a member of multicultural student organizations at ECC.
Q: How did you join both OLAS and USAC?
A: “I both joined them because I wanted to help them out. It could have been a sense of like I wanted to help out some people I knew and I wanted to do something that impacts positively the college community.”
Q: How did you get information from both clubs?
A: “A couple of friends of mine that I saw them in the cubicle and them when I saw their familiar faces, I wanted to help them out.”
Q: What is Multiculturalism?
A: “Is like a belief or in which all multiple cultures can like coexist, something like that. I’m not sure of the definite definition but it has something to do like that. Multicultural is like a belief and a study of all the cultures and how they all interact within each other.”
Q: How does multiculturalism relates to both OLAS and USAC?
A: “Back in the fall semester, they did this display of all the Latin American countries and their information. Both of those clubs actually do a lot to respect the cultures that they represent.”
Q: How do you present your culture?
A: “Food and music taste. Those are the two factors that I generally use to present my culture.”
Q: Can you mention the music and foods that you present to people?
A: “Since my father is Cuban and my mother’s Ecuadorian, my mother was taught by my father how to cook. She cooks Congri which is like rice, black rice with black beans. Then she makes Yuca. It’s like a potato but sort of a yam with vinegar.”
Q: What is your opinion on companies like Ben & Jerry’s supporting human rights?
A: “It’s good for them to support human rights because they have a right to express themselves and have a right to live in this country. If we don’t respect each other culture and ignore that they have rights to express themselves, then we are ignoring what makes America America.”
Q: Are you going to miss the people here at ECC?
A: “I’ll miss a lot of people that actually taught me how to have a good time because they kind of helped me in a way see things through a different lens.”
Q: Is there anything that you would like to mention that a lot of people don’t know?
A: “Well, what I would like for people to know about me is that I’m not just a person who like you can take superficial stuff with me, but if you actually get to know me, I’m much more of a deeper person than you actually think.”
Q: Do you try your best to check in on people every single day?
A: “Yes, every time. I try to always help some of the student life staff.”
