Wikileaks Releases Sensitive CIA Information
The first Friday of March, renowned non-profit-government-secret-leaking site Wikileaks, released a very large information dump that they titled ‘Vault 7.’
Vault 7 is multiple documents detailing a large portion of the CIA’s confidential hacking programs and techniques, receipts for selling the vulnerabilities to foreign countries, malware and virus creation for United States citizens, and illegal spying on US citizens.
This is one of the biggest leaks of information in CIA history, exposing the massive amount of illegal spying and cyber-attacks that are happening against US citizens. From ‘Zero Day’ vulnerabilities to using a false off on Smart TVs to use as microphones to access to your smart phone. For those unaware, a ‘Zero Day’ vulnerability is a hole in software that is unknown to vendors and is exploited by hackers before the developers can patch it out.
The malware being put out by the CIA specifically targets Apple software, Android software, and Samsung Smart TVs, capturing almost the entirety of the market share of mobile devices granting them access to back doors into devices along with the ability to insert Trojan viruses, malicious payloads and other malware that has been documented to be used covert operations around the world. The back doors allow even apps to send messages over encrypted files to be collected directly from the device before the encryption is applied.
The false-off virus on Smart TVs is code-named ‘Weeping Angel’ that allows the TV to act as a recording device while the owner is completely unaware of it. The leaks only state that Weeping Angel affects Samsung Smart TVs. As of 2014, the CIA is also looking into controlling the on board computer of cars, which would allow for covert assassinations.
There is also documentation of the CIA hiring third party hacking groups and teaching them to write code for malware and viruses to keep it undetectable. The leak of these declassified documents have also shown how the CIA has sold private information to for nations, like the United Kingdom. Not only does this contain information about private citizens but also hacks for things like unlocking and breaking iPhone encryption.
This is highly controversial since Apple repeatedly denied releasing the information to break the encrypted locks to the FBI after the San Bernardino shooting in early 2016. It has been found that the FBI has cracked the code and also shared it with the CIA which was then lost to or sold to hacking groups.
Having all this data might not seem like a big deal, especially if you’re someone who lives their life under the mantra of “well I have nothing to hide so it shouldn’t matter” however this allows for a very dangerous precedent to be set. Where are the facts that show all this information is truly helping fight whatever reason the CIA is given for hoarding all of this information.
Wikileaks has stated that more information will be released in the upcoming months detailing more about the government spying and tech exploits.
