Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel announced the new Snapchat design on Nov. 29, 2017. It has now arrived in February 2018.

The February 2018 update has gained a new look and format. The left side of Snapchat now contains chats and stories together. On the right side, stories from the media, publishers, famous people, and other communities are separate. The stories appear in an order based on the people they have most recently communicated with, where the rest fall down and get put into the mix. Snapchat users also have the choice to either watch the next upcoming story or reject it. They then need to scroll through the contacts and other snapchats to find the Story they want to view.

Students at Elgin Community College have responded to this update in various ways.

According to Erick Pacheco, a second-year student, it is not likable at all.

“It’s trash. Now I have to actually pay attention to what I’m clicking on,” Pacheco said.

Carleigh Frey, a student at ECC, believes that people are overreacting about Snapchat’s update and that it had to change eventually.

“I didn’t update it myself, so I was ticked off about that. Besides that, it is easy to figure out. It is just weirdly set up. These things happen all the time, it just left me surprised when I opened it with the update. It is not as drastic as people make it out to be. I don’t dislike it completely,” Frey said.

In the old version, a user would see their snaps, chats, and other conversations on the left side of Snapchat. When a user would switch to the right side, it would display all of their friends’ Stories and the popular news and media sites’ Stories separate, in chronological order on the top and alphabetical order on the bottom.

Monica Tomarchio, a second-year student has learned to live with the redesign.

“I use Snapchat the same amount as I did before; I’m not really bothered by it. I would prefer the other version, but you just have to adapt,” Tomarchio said.

Tomarchio revealed that her highest streak is over 700 days. She admits to being a faithful “Snapchatter” no matter what.
