Lady Spartans end home season with a devastating loss

On Tuesday, Feb. 14, Elgin Community College’s Women’s basketball team ended their home-season with a devastating loss against Moraine Valley Community College with a score of 87-48.

This loss continues a horrendous season for the Lady Spartans with them only winning a hand full of games, their playoff chances look bleak.

However, the overall feeling of the players is that their record doesn’t show how good their team has been doing, although this game showed differently.

Head Coach Jerry McLaughlin was very disappointed in not only this game, but the entire season, as well.

“Last night was sophomore night and I felt like we should have been fired up but I felt like we fell a little flat, we got down early in the first quarter but had a much better second half but the first half was very disappointing. We couldn’t stop their two big players on the inside and it hurt us. So I was disappointed in the first half,” McLaughlin said.

McLaughlin had a lot to say about this tea, their weaknesses and the game.

“We had a problem blocking the press, we had a bunch of turnovers early, we came out kind of lifeless I would have to say and I can’t explain why. We came out that way and they got up on us early, we just didn’t have it last night,” McLaughlin said.

McLaughlin had a hard time thinking of the team’s strengths.

“Our shooting was not real well, our rebounding was not good at all, our defensive transition and boxing out was not good, basically when they missed shots they got the rebounds and we had a few too many fouls during the game,” McLaughlin said.

The overall weakness of the game was defense between the rebounding and boxing out of players; defense was what lost them the game.

One player who believed that this was a game to forget was Patricia Dumoulin, who played her final home game for the team.

“We have played better games, the first half we didn’t come out right away and we dug ourselves into a hole which was really hard to get out of,” Dumoulin said.

Her sister, Nikki Dumoulin, agreed with that point but pointed out that the second half was much better for them.

“In the second half, we came out with more intensity and energy but like she said we just couldn’t dig ourselves out of the hole we were in,” Dumoulin said.

Patricia Dumoulin had a few positive comments on the game.

“Effort is always there, and at times when you are down it doesn’t seem like it but all of the girls out on the court are always trying their hardest and there are stuff that we can improve on but hard work is always something we have,” Dumoulin said.

With this loss, this ends an embarrassing season for the Lady Spartans and with the playoffs coming up, they more than likely have a low seed which makes their post season hopes look bleak.
