We are ECC’s student news source, and we are looking for people who can help us tell the ECC story. Students create all of the content that is published in the Observer. It’s great opportunity for students who are interested in a career in journalism, publishing, marketing, writing, communications, or social media. You can use your experience with the Observer to acquire internships and professional work.
No experience is needed. We’ll train you and provide all of the necessary equipment.

We offer two pathways for membership.
Pathway 1: JRN 134
Want guidance and hands-on training? Enroll in JRN 134. It meets MW from 11-12:15 p.m. Students learn how to find story ideas, conduct interviews, and access public records. In-class time is also used for students to work on their assignments. Students who enroll in JRN 134 are also members of the Observer student organization. Openings are available for the spring 2025 course.
JRN 298: Special Topics in Journalism
This class will focus on creating journalistic podcasts. Students learn how to create, write, and interview for podcasts. They’ll also have an opportunity to be published in the Observer. The class meets TTR 12:30-1:45 p.m. No pre-requisites are required.
Pathway 2: Student organization
Being a member or a freelancer is a great option for those with limited time. The advisor and the editorial team can work with you to craft a customized schedule that fits your availability. Students in this group are encouraged to attend our meetings on Monday from 11-11:30 a.m. in our office in Student Life, B173.10
