On Wednesday March 2, many female students at Elgin Community College took a pledge promising to always love their bodies no matter what. Students were able to make T-shirts and compact mirrors with positive messages about themselves and inspirational quotes.

Many students decorated T-shirts and mirrors with messages such as “I love my hair,”“Be courageous” and “Be yourself.” They had the option of signing the “Whole Body Pledge” where they can make a pledge to always take care of themselves physically and emotionally.

“It is easier to come up with things we [would] like to change about [our bodies] but we also need to remember that also carries out a lot of positive qualities,” said student and Wellness Center employee Flo Perez.

The mirrors in the girls’ bathrooms were also covered with a message telling women to take a break from the mirror. They also had the option to write encouraging messages to one another.

“The one I like to say is ‘imperfection equals beauty’,” said student Nashwa Rahim.

The main message of the event was that all bodies are beautiful and there are positive qualities about each woman.

“It’s a great way to remind ourselves of all the positive qualities that we literally carry with us everywhere we go,” said Perez.
