Spartans women’s basketball team of Elgin Community College rocked Harper 69-41 on Nov. 3, and improved their record to 1-1 after their first two games.

The night was filled with exciting defense and shooting from ECC as they steamrolled their way to victory in only their second game of the season.

Guards Sarah Lucansky, Tricia Dumoulin and Nikki Dumoulin all scored more than 10 points with 13, 14 and 16 respectively.

The Spartans started out slow and were down in the first quarter but quickly recovered.

Women’s Head Coach Jerry McLaughlin agreed that the ladies started out slow.

“After being down 8-2 at the beginning of the game and once we got our defense, and offense going that was a major key and that we took that lead and we never gave it back,” said McLaughlin.

The lead in the second quarter improved everything that happened in the first, as the lady Spartans showed off their skills by leading 30-17.

Harper, however, only really played well because of a couple players.

“Harper had three really solid players; No. 3 Angelina Villasin, No. 30 Tamara Zivak and No. 10 Sarah Mahmoud. They all played very well basketball and played very good attacking offense against our team,” said McLaughlin.

The Spartans would not look back on Harper and finished the game with a whopping 69-41 win.

Sophomore guard Monica Wians, who scored 4 points, felt that the game went very well.

“I thought that it was really good, we stuck together as a team, we had a rough start in the first but we definitely killed it in the quarters that followed, ” said Wians.

Sophomore forward Addy McMahon, who scored 8 points in the game, agreed with her fellow teammates in regards to the performance of the team.

“We had a lot of good energy going after that first quarter, we hit it and that we kept going with it after that for the rest of the game,” said McMahon.

Coach McLaughlin thought one major strength that the girls had was that they played team basketball.

“We played team basketball, we looked to push the ball. I’m not really pleased with our free throws and that our communication but our team work is there, and also no one thinks there better than anyone else which I believe is a strength,” said McLaughlin.

Recent changes to the athletic department at ECC include the ‘division three school’ title, now entailing that teams will be playing harder and better schools.

“I’m hoping with us being D-III, these are all local players, so we are all trying to find in district players that are willing to represent ECC,” said Mclaughlin.

After this game, they improved their record to 1-1, however, with their division being moved, they play about 20 games against rougher division two teams, which might make it a challenge for ECC’s women’s basketball team.

The next home games are Nov. 17 and Nov. 22 against Judson University and College of Dupage.
