Elgin Community Spartans baseball team got an easy 17th win as they beat Bryant & Stratton College 3-0 on April 30 at the Spartan Baseball Field.
This is the last home game of the season for the Spartans. Almost 15 people dressed warmly in the stands on a cloudy, cold day. clouds.
Bill Angelo, head coach of the ECC baseball team mentioned their turning point of the season on.
“This team fought took us a while to kind of find our identity of who we were as a team and how we were going to go about things,” he said. “Once we did that, and kind of settled in, I think that our guys did a really nice job of kind of turning the season around here and playing really good down the stretch, and hopefully we can continue that on into the playoffs.”
The team start scored only one run in the bottom of the first 1st inning. In the third inning, infielder/outfielder Jack Perrone hit his second home run of the season.
As the game went on, the Spartans are still leading by three runs lead but they managed to score no runs for the rest of the game. Pitcher Leth Pearson had performance four strikeouts within the entire game.
Coach Angelo mentioned the strategy to score three runs in the first few innings of the game.
“We’re just trying to put good swings together, trying to get a leadoff guy on, then we feel pretty good about our chances,” he said. “We try to move them over, get them on, get them over, get them in. It is kind of our philosophy. Get them on, over and in.”
He noted the injury situation that the pitching staff had to recover. season.
“A couple of our key starters went down with injuries so we had to kind of figure out where everybody is at.” Angelo said. “All of a sudden, people have different roles that we weren’t expecting them to have but guys have kind of settled into those roles and are doing a great job of getting our pitching staff back to where it needs to be heading into the postseason. For example, one starting pitcher plays as a reliever.”
Angelo stated the pitching staff is ready to have a backup plan in case someone is injured.
“We’re battling through it. I mean, when you lose two of your top four starters, you know that’s gonna take a toll on a team, but our guys have done a nice job.” he said. “The guys, the relievers that have stepped up into starting roles, have really done a nice job and accepted their roles and have done great for us.”
“We’ll get into the playoffs. I’m confident we will get in and where we’ll heading. If we play like we played in that last game, we will be fine.” Angelo said. “We’re kind of back to playing our brand of baseball, kind of Spartan style baseball. We’re confident that with whoever we match up against, we’ll be ready to play. “
Jack Perrone, first year infielder/outfielder stated he felt relieved after hitting a home run in the third inning.
good. “That was my second one ever. So it always feels really good.” he said.
He noted that beating their rival was his best moment of the season.
“Probably beating McHenry Community College, which was our rival game, and it was a big win on our sophomore night too.” Perrone said.
Perrone mentioned that he chose ECC because of the location and resources that they offer.
“I knew a lot of the guys going here, the coaches are amazing great and I like the facility. It has good fields and it is also closest to home so it felt good to fit here.” he said.
On Friday, the Spartans next game will be on the road against Bryant & Stratton College at 9 a.m. and Black Hawk College at 3 p.m.
