My journey with The Observer, Elgin Community College’s (ECC) newspaper organization, has been one of the most educational and rewarding experiences of my time here. I initially joined eager to write, but I quickly realized that being a part of this organization demanded much more than just putting words on paper—it required becoming a student of the college community itself.

The newsroom environment introduced me to the vital skill of working under pressure. Deadlines wait for no one, and learning to manage my time, research thoroughly, and write clearly while the clock ticked became second nature. This necessity to perform under constraint was, perhaps, the most unexpected, yet valuable, lesson in professional readiness I received.

Beyond the logistical challenges, The Observer fundamentally shaped my abilities as a communicator. I’ve definitely learned how to become a better writer, moving beyond academic essays to crafting concise, engaging prose that serves the reader. Furthermore, the role pushed me into situations where I had to actively interview diverse sources across the campus.

It’s in these interviews that I truly grasped the importance of hearing different perspectives. Every conversation—whether with a fellow student, a faculty member, or an administrator—revealed a unique angle on an issue, enriching the story and broadening my own understanding of the world. It’s a core journalistic principle that has resonated with me deeply: the best journalism is built on empathy and a genuine desire to represent all voices.

Being Viviana Avila, a member of The Observer, has not just given me clips for a portfolio; it has equipped me with real-world skills in communication, critical thinking, and community engagement that I will carry forward long after I leave ECC.
