Elgin Community College’s men’s basketball team played Harper College on Nov. 3 and won a tough game with a score of 80-64.

The team came out strong and never looked back as they led Harper at halftime with a score of 44-35, pulling even farther away in the second half with a final score of 80-64.

All ECC players had great games, including six players who had over 10 points in the game with No. 0 Chris Benjamin leading the way with 17 points.

The six players included Chris Benjamin, Charles Sanders, Homer Denson, Juwan Steward, Desmond Douglas and Jake Codi, scoring 17, 10, 13, 11, 10 and 10 points respectively.

The team went a total of 29 for 75 with the shots made to shots fired which ended up being only 38.7% and only went 9-34 from three point range which was 26.5%.

On a bright side, they did have 34 rebounds in the game; 21 coming from the defense and 13 coming from offensive rebounding.

Head Coach Reed Nosbisch believed that this was not their greatest game this year.

“We were a little sloppy, I thought that we had a lot of turnovers. I don’t think that we played very well defensive, but at the same mark it is Nov. 3, it’s early and we don’t really have any experience coming back,” said Nobirsch.

Overall, in this game the Spartans had a total of 10 turnovers, with a total 9 turnovers a game which is the 18th most in the division so far this year.

Nosbisch did agree with the rebounding stats and believed that it was one of the strengths of the game.

“I thought that we rebounded decent, and we showed signs of playing well with moving the ball and so forth, but we still put up 80 points but I just didn’t feel that we were there offensive,” said Nosbisch.

Guard Chris Benjamin, who put up 17 points in the game, also believed the team could have played a better game against Harper.

“We didn’t play the way we should have played but I still think that we finished very well,” said Benjamin.

Agreeing with fellow teammate was guard Jordan Anderson, who put up five points, himself.

“I think that we did well. They had a decent team, they were pretty good, but I thought that we could have played better,” said Anderson.

Nobisch believes that there a couple of things that need to change as the team heads into the next few games of the season.

“I think that we need to work on the defensive side, we get lazy at times and we need to work better on the team concept,” said Nobisch.

He also credited Harper for putting up a good game, even though they only had one returning player to their team.

“They didn’t do that bad, I know that they only had one returning player and they’re kind of in the same situation that we are in, it’s early in the year and were still trying to find out how to gel with each other,” said Nobisch.

With only two games played this far, the team holds a record of two wins and no losses this season; let’s hope the Spartans can keep it up for the rest of the year.
