Freddy Lagunes, a Side Street Studio Art employee, led an origami workshop on Nov. 6. Lagunes walked through multiple techniques with attendees, including the “hand” and “arm” techniques and how to make an origami dragon.

“I love sharing knowledge on origami because it has culture and science,” Lagunes said. “You could say that there’s a little bit of magic [in] being able to make something out of a simple piece of paper [that] people can really enjoy.”

“I’ve probably done something like this in the past, but nothing this ornate,” said attendee Melissa Routzahn.

“This is my first time,” said attendee Faith Lill.

Lagunes, who first started making origami back in first grade, has been doing it for more than two decades. He says that he doesn’t get burnt out because it’s a relaxing activity for him.

“There’s an infinite amount of folds you can do; every one of them unique in their own way,” he said.

Side Street Studio Art, which was founded in 2013, is an outlet for Elgin artists to showcase their work. Their Instagram advertises educational workshops and seminars for anyone looking for something new to try.
