The Spartans rally their way to victory as they beat Morton College 9-2 in game 1 of the doubleheader at the Spartan Baseball Field on April 13.

The team got off to a good start as catcher/outfielder Nick Weaver put out the first run of the game which made it 1-0 Spartans. First baseman/catcher Jack Kerno put out the second run of the game which made the game 2-0 at the end of the 1st inning.

The team’s offense got off to a good start as they put out 6 hits during the game. In the bottom of the 6th inning, outfielder/first baseman Aiden Kashuba put out a home run in center field. In terms of pitching, pitcher Troy Petty had a wonderful performance as he has 6 shutouts in the game.

After the game, coach Bill Angelo and infielder Andrew Flynn gave their reactions to the game.

Coach Angelo answered a question on how the team is feeling coming into the game which is “Big game. Big game. Excited with the way we played. Guys were ready to go”.

He gave his reaction about the game. According to him, he said “Happy. I’m proud of them. They’re doing a great job. They are playing very good team baseball. We talk about playing not for yourself but playing for the guys”.

Coach Angelo answered a question regarding the players on where to hit. His response was “That’s more of our approach. We want our guys to kinda live in the middle”.

He gave his thoughts on his 800 win milestone that he got recently. His response was “It means I’ve been doing it for a long time for starters. I think overall it’s cool when a lot of my alumni reach back out and come out to the game”.

Infielder Andrew Flynn gave his reaction to the game. He answered a question on how the team is feeling after the game which is “We played super good this game. It’s all about what we’ve been doing lately. We’ve been setting the tone early. We’ve been putting runs up early. Putting hits up early. Getting guys on”.

He explained the reason why the Spartans play better at home than on the road. According to him, he said “Home field advantage. We come out here everyday. We work as hard as we can on this field for practice”.

Flynn gave his reaction on how the team stays composed on the plate which is “Staying humble. Let our game do the talking”.

Also, he explained the team’s strategy for good defense in that game. According to him, he said “We’re having our outfielders stay deep because these guys like to elevate. Read the ball, read where it’s going”.

The team continues their winning streak to 5 games and they’re 13-12 overall in the season.

The Spartans beat Morton College 11-1 in game 2 of the doubleheader.
