The team’s losing streak continues to four games as they lose to Waubonsee Community College 60-90 on Feb. 12 at the Spartans Event Center.

The building had a nice, crisp warm air coming in; people were bringing in gifts and decorations to celebrate the sophomore players for their final home game as Spartans players. 

They got off to a rough start as they put effort into taking the lead. The first quarter ended with the score of 12-25. 

In the second quarter, the Spartans tried their best to catch up with their opponent but they didn’t have enough confidence to reach their goal. They finished the first half with 32 points while trailing by 16 points. 

Audience member Sam Painter shared his thoughts on the game which is 

“Both sides are playing well, sharing the ball pretty well. It’s a good game” he said. 

He mentioned that he would like to see both the Spartans and Waubonsee make improvements in the second half to make the game more exciting. 

“They probably could make a couple improvements on their defensive and offensive side of things, but overall, it’s doing well,” Painter commented. 

As people are getting ready to go back to their seats, the second half starts. The Spartans were still finding a solution to catch up with their opponent so they can take the lead early. Third quarter ends with 44-71 Spartans. 

In the fourth quarter, the team is putting as much effort as they can to score more points so they can tie the game and possibly go to overtime. Unfortunately, they couldn’t reach that goal. As the game got closer to the end, the building went silent. 

Head coach Eumeka Aguado shared her thoughts on the team’s performance.

Aguado mentioned that the team was having a hard time playing defense and following the game plan.

“I feel like our defense was okay, but we were still getting beat off the dribble. We weren’t talking and communicating at times. There were a couple of times where we didn’t get back on defense, on defensive transition, so they got some layups. We got to work on the game plan” she said. 

According to Aguado, she stated the Spartans didn’t translate the team’s scoring average in the game vs Waubonsee. 

“We could have done a better job scoring. We had two girls that pretty much were in double digits, and the other girls weren’t really scoring as much as we had. We struggled with offense movement, moving without the ball and moving the ball. I felt like we didn’t get a lot of opportunities to score because we would turn the ball over and because we didn’t have good ball movement” Aguado said. 

The women’s basketball head coach mentioned the team’s outlook so far this season. 

“The game plan is we have to have a really good practice on Monday and Wednesday so we can prepare for Thursday. After that, we’ll find out where we are seated at but we will make the Region Tournament.” 

Guard Alisea Doan gave her thoughts on the game but also reflected on her time as a women’s basketball player at Elgin Community College.

“I think we all kind of probably came out nervous. I know I was nervous. We honestly changed it a little bit as we continued to go through the game.” she commented. 

According to Doan, she stated that she didn’t score more than her season average. 

“I did not but I will continue to keep working and at the next level.” 

The Sophomore guard said that she had a good time as a Spartan. 

“Honestly, it was different. I’ve never been in a situation or never been in an environment like this, and I loved it. It was very different. I just want to continue trying to do bigger things.” Doan mentioned. 

Guard Abigail Esparza expresses her thoughts on her individual performance vs Waubonsee. 

“Individually, I did. I loosened up and got some threes in.” she said. 

The second year guard stated that she didn’t score more points than her average in this game. 

“I need to work a little bit more about getting face guarded,” Esparza mentioned. 

Esparza mentioned that she had an amazing time playing for the women’s basketball team and learning new things as time goes on.   

“My time here was a journey. There were a lot of ups and downs. I learned a lot of new lessons, not only on the basketball floor, but just growing up in general, becoming an adult.” she said.
