Production Director of the Arts Center, Alexander Desimone, shares his journey and the vital role he plays in bringing productions and events to life for the enjoyment of ECC students.
Q: What inspired you to pursue a career in both theater and arts administration?
A: “I really enjoyed working in the theater and especially backstage…building the sets, hanging lights, working with sound…I did that throughout high school. From there, I wanted to continue my education… I completed my BS degree in Theater Technology…. and my master’s degree… I continued to work through the shows…I just really enjoyed working with my hands and building the construction of the sets.”
Q: What’s the most exciting part of your job as Production Director at the Arts Center?
A:“We have a professional series that features artists, different groups, and bands. Last year, we had the Tibetan monks, and this year, we have Disenchanted…I really enjoy working with all these different groups because every day is different… there’s always a new problem to solve or a new show coming through with different groups of people.“
Q: Can you tell me a significant challenge that comes with organizing a production?
A: “No matter where you work, in professional theater or at a college, you’re limited by budget, time, and resources…The challenging part is creating the director’s vision for the production using the available resources.”
Q: Are there any upcoming shows or projects at the Arts Center that you’re especially excited about?
A: “The show is called Twelfth Night, and I think it will be interesting to see how the play comes to life on stage. The touring company is bringing their whole set with them. They use minimal lighting and no audio equipment because it’s meant to be like an outdoor theater…I’m looking forward to seeing how that comes together. Another show I’m looking forward to is Under the Streetlamp, a group that started at ECC years ago…I think those two are the most interesting.”
Q: What’s one piece of advice you’d give to a student considering a career in theater production?
A: “Deciding on a career in theater comes down to what you want to do. Do you want to be fully hands-on all the time, or are you looking for more of a management role? …I think establishing your goals within this career is very important”
Q:What is your vision for the future of the Arts Center’s productions, and what kind of legacy do you hope to leave behind?
A:“I hope to be remembered for my detailed work… and organization skills.”
