ECC Student Worker, Kylie Miller, speaks on her experiences with school life and managing a busy schedule.
Q: How long have you been attending ECC?
A: This is my second semester. I forgot when the first semester started
Q: Do you have a major at all? If so, why did you choose that field?
A: My major is an associates in science. I’m a very outdoor person. And, I want to continue being outside my whole life, so I want to do like animal science and wildlife. And, they don’t have that degree here, so I just started with an associate’s degree.
Q: So you plan on transferring somewhere else? What are you thinking about?
A: Yeah, um, I want to do something like Iowa State because they have a lot of good animal programs there. So yeah, just Iowa State.
Q: What challenges have you encountered as a student?
A: I’m working, so I’m like a full-time student and a part-time worker here, so sometimes it feels like I’m running out of time, and that’s just a big one. It can be a little stressful right now.
Q: How has your experience as a student worker been?
A: It’s very positive. There have been some weird conversations with students, or like other people coming up to me at work, and so that’s the only negative. Sometimes I just have rude customers.
Q: What do you do to balance work/school life?
A: Usually, I don’t work Fridays, so those days are my free days. So, like, I’m more focused on work or school. I always have Fridays to myself.
Q: What benefits do you get from working on campus?
A: There’s a couple. Um, well, the biggest is that the school just—I don’t need to drive to work. I can just drive to school, then to work. So I don’t need to drive a lot, which I like. Another benefit they give me is like tuition reimbursement and stuff like that.
Q: Do you think you can elaborate a little bit?
A: My tuition, um, if you just have a C grade average, they give you some money back, but it’s not the full amount. And it’s usually just that semester, and then they like do some math, and that’s how much you get back for the semester.
Q: In what ways do you think your field could benefit from improvement?
A: I don’t know. I’m trying to think. I don’t think there’s anything.
Q: What is your favorite thing about your job?
A: I like all my coworkers. There are some I’m not close with. I also like working with people that are almost all the same age group. Because I know at my last job, I had a range of people that now I feel like I’m working with people more close in age.
