Beginning on Tuesday, Feb. 6, Elgin Community College’s Student Government set up a table to aid students wishing to register to vote in the primary election. The local primary election is on Tuesday, March 20. Student Government held voter registration throughout building B for two weeks in hope of registering students before the Feb. 20 deadline and the deadline for online registration, March 4.

Student Government Treasurer Abigail Anderson and Senator Dario Flores set up the table event on Wednesday, Feb. 14, and shared their perspective on voter registration.

“The purpose of holding voter registration is to make people aware of upcoming elections and encourage them to vote for people who support what they believe in,” Anderson said.

“Everyone should vote because everyone has a different opinion and those differences are what help shape the future,” Flores said.

Laptops were set up on these tables, all already opened to the Illinois Online Voter Application website. On display, there were some of the many requirements to be eligible to vote for the Illinois Primary Election. Requirements included the providence of an Illinois driver’s license or Illinois state ID number, date the license or ID was issued, the last four digits of one’s social security, and the applicant’s birth date.

Ethan Mayfield, a second-year student, passed by the voter registration table and was undecided on whether or not to register.

“Honestly, I have not registered. I don’t even know who’s running,” Mayfield said. “Voting doesn’t exactly matter to me because I can’t attest to anything going on, but I’m not against it either.”

Within 15 minutes, Mayfield was seen registering. Right after Mayfield registered, Anderson thanked him for doing so.
