Inspiring women celebrated over tea

Elgin Community College continues to celebrate women during the Women’s history month.  The Inspiring Women’s Tea event took place on March 21, in room B 180. This event invited the students and members of the ECC community to nominate a woman who they feel is inspiring, in order to give them recognition at “tea time”.

Yvette Argueta, Student Life Administrative Assistant and lead of the event, along with the other members of the Student Life committee, received the female students and ECC staff with an extensive variety of snacks and teas to make the gala more comfortable.

“One of the things we hope to achieve with this event is that everyone leaves here feeling different and special,” Argueta said.

To start the celebration, Electa Gibbs, a student at ECC, began by reciting an emotional poem to the guests, followed by a speech with which she managed to captivate the audience. In a brief way, Gibbs offered a personal story about her mother and her battle with cancer for many years, making reference to why she was her motivation.

“I love women,” Gibbs said, “because don’t matter what we go through, we always keep strong, and I learned that from my mom.”

Maggie Sherman and Pili Camargo, also ECC students, offered a few words to the public. They were charismatic and emotional at the same time.

After a short break, the awards ceremony was held, closing the celebration. According to Yvette, there were more than 200 nominations, and although not all the nominees were able to attend the event, their award and flowers, as a congratulatory detail, were saved.
