On March 5, a formerly enrolled ECC student will appear in a Kane County Circuit Court to face criminal charges for an alleged on-campus burglary that occurred Feb. 1.

According to ECC Police, Hasnain Raza, 19, was arrested for one count of burglary and one count of criminal trespass to vehicle.

If convicted, Raza may face three to seven years imprisonment for the felony burglary charge and less than a year for the misdemeanor criminal trespass, according to Illinois Compiled Statutes.

On the morning of Feb. 1, ECC Police investigated a report of someone entering unlocked vehicles in ECC parking lots at 11:00 am. ECC police announced the incident via email to the ECC community on Feb. 5.

The car burglary occurred outside of building A and was in the B parking lot.

“We had a student that went out to their car and noticed somebody had rifled through their car and [the student] came in and called the ECC Police,” said ECC Chief of Police, David Kintz.

The officers watched the outside security camera videos and observed an individual going into cars.

“We saw him try into about ten door handles and got into four cars,” Kintz said.“When that person walked into the building, one of the officers recognized him from an encounter last semester. And we knew who the person was.”

He said the former student allegedly stole cash.

Raza was charged on Feb. 6 and turned himself in to the ECC Police, according to Kintz.

Raza is accused of burglarizing the vehicle of Valdrin Ismaili and criminally trespassing in Christina Biel’s vehicle, according to Kane County Court records.

The last time a similar event occurred was October 2022, said Kintz.

“We just remind people to a) to make sure their cars are locked and b) do not leave valuables out in the open where someone might see that,” Kintz said. “We appreciate the willingness of that person to come forward and let us know [so] we can take action.”
