ECC students express their thoughts and concerns over the shooting that occurred in Minnesota.
“It’s very unfortunate that a lot of these things happen,” said ECC student Alice Mackie.
According to a Public Opinion Research company, Gallup, “Even before a shooter this week killed two children and injured numerous others during a Minneapolis Catholic church, U.S. parents were registering heightened anxiety about their own children’s safety at school.”
Parents aren’t the only ones who have concerns; students who attend these schools are at the center of these events.
“I believe that more rules should be enforced, more safety,” Mackie said.
Another student attending ECC, Layla Ramirez, said, “More rules need to be enforced.”
Easy accessibility to different kinds of weapons also raises concern among students due to who can have them, as well as the influence of the media.
“Easy access to guns, mental health, and then also just the popularization of the Columbine shooter,” Mackie said.
Mental health is another topic that correlates with reading the signs of a shooter.
“Potential signs would definitely be isolation. They’re not really talking to friends, or maybe they have one other friend, so like they’re isolating themselves,” Mackie said.
Having officers available on campus reassures these students from the dangers of possibly falling victim to these shooters.
“There’s always police officers on campus, which also makes me feel safe. I don’t believe I question my safety here,” Ramirez said.
Whether it is mental health or easy accessibility to weapons, having prior knowledge of the signs of dangerous situations can prevent disasters from occurring.

How many police officers are at ECC? ECC has so many buildings, how do they decide which building the officers should be at?
Are all the staff at ECC trained to recognize a student with mental health issues so they can try to prevent a shooting?
